Located in the historical building of the Nautical Institute "Francesco Caracciolo" in Procida, the "Sea Museum" was founded in 1996 to enhance and promote the rooted maritime traditions of the island. Initially created for educational purposes, for students of the Institute today it is a precious museum of memories that preserves the essence of love, devotion and passion for the sea, that for centuries characterized the people of Procida, the land captains, sailors and fishermen.
For an island the sea is a fundamental element, and, especially, for a small island like Procida that at first glance is so close to the mainland, but at the same time is associated more with the marine element rather than the "metropolis" of Naples. So the people of Procida have always found their work at sea rather than in the city, as they are driven more willingly towards that mysterious, yet beneficial "blue resource" rather than the populous Parthenope. That special bond that has always been between Procida and the sea has created this precious museum.
The Sea Museum has two sections: a bibliography with adjoining historical archives, documenting the history of the maritime tradition of the island, and the second section dedicated to the votive and religious traditions of seafaring activities in Procida and a several proverbs and folk songs related to the sea.
